AI8 Top 11 Performance Night.

THEME: GRAND OLE OPRY

1) Michael Sarver - "Ain't Goin' Down Til The Sun Comes Up" (6/10)
-- Overall it was a very very fun performance. Reminds me of my 1-week Country Music phase back in college. ROFL
Vocally though... holy trainweck! I like this guy a whole lot. Heck, I even thought he was gonna kill it tonight, but sadly he made a big mistake in choosing that Garth Brooks song. It was -an understatement, I know- too wordy for his own good. This puts him in a very shaky ground; he should've gone with a slower song that would showcase his strengths - y'know heart, passion and all that.

2) Allison Iraheta - "Blame It On Your Heart" (7/10)
-- Pretty solid vocals, although a bit forgettable. Glad to hear her sensitive side. She's starting to grow on me, talent-wise. I'm still not digging her face though, sorry.

3) Kris Allen - "To Make You Feel My Love" (9/10)
-- What a pleasant surprise. He took a huge risk and man did it pay off. It was raw, clean, and vulnerable. I'm at a loss for words because his performance doesn't call for a lot; it was simply just excellent. Definitely one of the best tonight.

4) Lil Rounds - "Independence Day" (7/10)
-- She sang it okay, but it came off as a lil (HAHA) forced, making everything feel uncomfortable. Her RnB style just doesn't suit well with country. She also has a knack for picking songs that are too familiar, making her performances predictable. She'll survive this though. If not, I'm sure the judges will save her.

5) Adam Lambert - "Ring of Fire" (2/10)
-- I understand that artists should never compromise their style if they are to remain authentic, but WHAT IN HEAVEN'S NAME WAS THAT?!! I immediately texted Lex that listening to Adam perform felt like I was burning in hell. He's actually very good; I'll even go out on a limb and say he's gonna make the final 2, but his vocal arrangements and flamboyant nature just annoys the shit out of me.

6) Scott MacIntyre - "Wild Angels" (4/10)
-- Pretty interesting song choice. Guys usually do better when they take on female songs, but this was just meh for me. He doesn't seem to be bringing anything else to the table anymore. Drama? Danny. Instruments? Matt. Kris. Vocals? Everyone else. I'm sorry, I know he works the hardest among all of the contestants, but it's just his time to go.

7) Alexis Grace - "Jolene" (5/10)
-- Vocals were all over the place. Kara's right, she would've been better off with Before He Cheats or Last Name. I know she was trying to sound soft and vulnerable, but the entire performance was lacking soul and personality. I love this girl, heck I even crush her, but I liked Brooke White's version better. And her hair was horrible (I thought she looked like Dolly Parton at some point!)

8) Danny Gokey - "Jesus Take The Wheel" (8.5/10)
-- While I agree with Randy & Kara on his chorus sounding way better than his verses, I still think it was right for him to start slow to build momentum. My only criticism of him at this point is that it's becoming more and more apparent that he can only "power up" for a short while. He runs out of air too quickly, making his phrasing a bit odd.
But I've been a hardcore fan since Day 1, and I still very much am. His vocals are brilliant, his songs inspiring, and I'm quite sure I'll be sticking with this guy till the finale.
(I was LOL-ing at how much "lighting" he got during his performance. The producers went all out on him, pang-finale! Swear, the bright white lights felt like angels were gonna swoop down from above any second. HAHA the heaven to Adam's hell!)

9) Anoop Desai - "You Were Always On My Mind" (7.5/10)
-- While I honestly find his performance to be forgettable, I'm glad that the 'ol Anoop Dogg is back. Decent vocals, earnest charm, but a bit too boyband-ish, IMO. Glad someone had a slice of the humble pie last week. I just hate it that the show's making it too obvious that they're grooming him to be the underdog that everybody loves. "Zero to hero", Simon said it all.

10) Megan Corkrey- "Walkin' After Midnight" (8/10)
-- Once again, I enjoyed her performance. Finally, the Megan I like returns! While her stage presence and movements were still very much awkward, she sounded waaay better this week. I love it when her vocals go all jazzy/bluesy. Weird when coupled with her looks, but compliments her quirkiness well.

11) Matt Giraud - "So Small" (8/10)
-- It was part boring, part interesting. Like I mentioned before, I love his Timberlake/Mayer and recently Buble sensitive singer-songwriter vibe, but I think his vocals still need some work. While I thought he had a winner's aura tonight, I still strongly disagree with Simon's opinion on him having outsung Gokey tonight. It is so not on. Pfffft.

I just realized earlier today, in the middle of a hot afternoon (our office AC wasn't working. FAIL.), that it's my first summer without a vacation. Sure, we had summer classes in college, but we still had our 2-week breaks before and after. And I was jobless for three months last year.

I also just realized that because I'm so busy with work, there are summer-y things I might not be able to do anymore. Like watch the first run of Idol on TV at 6pm. (Well, not if I can help it. I ninja-ed out of the office today at 5:30. LOL.)

Anyway, my point is..

AI8 Top 13 Performance Night.

THEME: MICHAEL JACKSON

1) Lil Rounds - "The Way You Make Me Feel" (9/10)
-- Lil sounded so good that I actually liked her tonight, to my surprise. I initially thought she was boring and overrated even, but I'm starting to reconsider. She has Fantasia's stage presence with LaToya London's grace. The show needs at least one good 'ol reliable female powerhouse every season, and Lil is just that.

2) Scott MacIntyre - "Keep the Faith" (7/10)
-- Again, I surprisingly liked his performance tonight. The song was perfect for him, melody and message-wise. But overall, I dunno.. I'm just not too crazy about his vocal chops. He surely has mad keyboard skillz for a blind guy, but his inspirational songs can only take him so far. Plus, he creeps me out a bit. Sorry.

3) Danny Gokey - "Pretty Young Thing (P.Y.T.)" (9/10)
-- I am so SO happy there wasn't anything Sophia(dead wife)-related in his AVP. Shame on me for calling myself a fan, I actually thought he would suck tonight. But the man did NOT disappoint one bit. Danny upped his game with an up-tempo song, worked the crowd, and even tried (but failed haha) to dance well. More than displaying his vocal range, I think he was able to show the audience that he actually knows how to have some fun. There was still some pimping from the judges' table, but I feel Danny totally deserved it this time. I'm a bit bothered that the haters are dubbing him as Taylor Hicks 2.0 because he does have that old soul vibe to him, but I seriously doubt that. This one sounds more current, is better looking, and is definitely less crazy on stage. I believe the music industry will have a place for him.

4) Michael Sarver - "You Are Not Alone" (7.5/10)
-- Very heartfelt performance. I'm a fan of his, but I honestly did not expect him to sound good tonight. And for the fourth time in a row, I sure was surprised. Maybe he's a bit bland and generic, and maybe he exerts too much effort when he sings, but he's got that likeable "average Joe" humble image that makes him genuine for me. I don't feel him going far, but man I hope he will.

5) Jasmine Murray - "I'll Be There" (6/10)
-- Meh. She technically sang it well, but I just don't see anything special about her. Very typical Idol contestant. If one of my favorites go before she does, Imma breathe fire.

6) Kris Allen - "Remember the Time" (8/10)
-- The guitar was totally out of place in the song's arrangement, but if it helps him ease up, then I'm good with it. I totally agree with Simon on Kris bringing up the wife too soon. I think I just heard a collective "WTF.. WIFE??" from the ladies around the globe. LOL. I like him; I think he has pretty decent vocals to back up his aw-shucks demeanor. I hope he'd give better performances so he can advance by means of his talent and not just because of his looks.

7) Allison Iraheta - "Give In To Me" (8/10)
-- Performance was forgettable for me. She hasn't done anything to make me a fan yet. I gotta give props to her for being so vocally mature at such a young age though. Singing with a strong, husky rocker voice doesn't seem easy for a 16 year-old, but she manages to pull it off well all the time.

8) Anoop Desai - "Beat It" (3/10)
-- Not enough energy/craziness on stage tonight. Totally the wrong song choice. There were moments when Anoop looked liked he wanted to go wild but failed to do so. I also got annoyed at the slight arrogance he showed when he was being judged. Tsk. I feel that he has a HUGE fan base though, so we'll probably be seeing him for a long long time. Don't get me wrong, I want him to do well in the competition, 'cause he actually performs well; I just hate how Danny has gotten a lot of flak for being 'the anointed one' early on, when in fact Anoop is the one obviously being groomed to be the underdog. Group 3 Pimp Spot, last one to be called for the Wild Card round, Wild Card Pimp Spot, and the 'surprise' 13th Spot. AW COME FREAKING ON.

9) Jorge Nuñez - "Never Can Say Goodbye" (5/10)
-- I remember him singing and sounding well, but overall it was forgettable. Culture-wise, people already have a minority hero, and Anoop is definitely more interesting. I find Jorge's sensitivity too annoying. Stop sobbing and grow some balls man.

10) Megan Corkrey - "Rockin' Robin" (8/10)
-- I honestly found her number to be very entertaining. Weird song choice, but I really believe she performed (not sang) it well. I think her awkward and clumsy moves suit her equally quirky voice. She's a breath of fresh air for a show that takes itself too seriously. And I hate that she's VoteForTheWorst's anointed one. Dumbasses can't tell the difference between an indie artist and Sanjaya.

11) Adam Lambert - "Black or White" (9/10)
-- I thought that if anyone in the bunch can pull this night off, it would have to be Adam. And he did amazing. Alas, I am not a fan of his. His eyeliner creeps me out, I hate it when he goes all theatrical & over the top, and I absolutely abhor his Steven Tyler shrieks. And my being a homophobe has nothing to do with it. And let's pretend I don't consider him to be Danny's only threat.

12) Matt Giraud - "Human Nature" (7/10)
-- Okay vocals; too fine, too high, IMO. Mad piano skillz. Could've been better. But like I said, he delivered. I'm starting to like him though. I just hope this Justin Timberlake/John Mayer hybrid pulls off more exciting performances.

13) Alexis Grace - "Dirty Diana" (8/10)
-- First of all, I agree with the judges comments tonight about her overdoing it, the song was too big for her. I hope she could've chosen something softer and just rocked away with it, 'cause that will surely suit her powerful, soulful voice. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is OH MY GOD I think I'm in crush. There is a disconnect between her dainty, pretty aura and her rebellious musical vibe, but I don't really mind. Ahihi.

I'm starting to like Izzie again. Here's hoping that her (annoyingly) crazy days are (finally) over. I'm also hoping T.R. stays, just for old times' sake. Writers are also doing a good job at making Owen & Cristina the anti-MerDer, IMO.

(Was supposed to post this last night, but I never got to finish the entry)

So I really thought I was gonna spend the entire evening just laughing the incident off. People from work were even surprised that I was coping with it rather well. And at some point, I too was convinced that I wasn't gonna be affected one bit.

Until I talked to my Achi Joyce over the phone and realized that Kyle's gift was inside the luggage as well.
Until the night became silent and I started looking for my external hard drive for music.
Until the caffeine started to lose its effect.

It's not even about the clothes nor the shoes nor the vanity bag (haha). I believe I'm mature and man enough to let go of such luxuries. I was also able to convince myself that the business cards and the work notebook weren't that important, anyway.
Why, I've even started to accept the fact that there's a chance I won't be seeing my trusty 'ol point-and-shoot ever again.
What hit me the most was the fact that all of my family, R2, and work memories were saved into the external hard drive. Never mind the TV episodes, never mind the mp3s, never mind the games. I'm just saddened that some of those ultra-rare moments caught on cam might already be lost forever.

To top things off, the depression that's starting to creep into me is probably a result of the guilt I'm feeling - guilt from feeling bad during the most wonderful time of the year. I know it's just a natural reaction for anyone to feel down after what happened, and I'm sure it's totally fine w/ Jesus Christ; but when you zoom out to look at the bigger picture, this is just some shallow shit.

I guess that's His will, then. Maybe I've been too caught up with the material blessings that He decided to simplify my life a bit. Perhaps the consecutive "ups" in my life have made me arrogant. Ok, that was probably too harsh. I dunno, I think God just wanted me to really get a feel of what Christmas should be about?

So I've realized that no, I won't allow myself to not be fine. Sure, tears are still welling up from my eyes, but life has to go on.
Christmas has to go on.
I've waited 364 nights for this, so no, I won't allow my favorite moment of the year to be ruined just like that. I'm gonna spare you the some-people-don't-even-have-food-on-their-tables spiel, but just on a final note, I seriously think I still have a lot more to be thankful for at the end of the day.

I'm home. I'm with my family. I'm communicating with my friends via cellphone and the net. In the absence of material belongings, I've somehow learned to focus on what matters most.

My YM status currently says "believes God thinks he's too materialistic. My frigging luggage is missing! ".
I'm laughing now, but I'm pretty sure I'll cry my eyes out later once the shock wears off. I'll just wait for my parents to hit the sack.

So yeah, I enjoyed this week's Grey's Anatomy very much. I'm actually very very pleased that this season's storyline has improved greatly. The show might never have that Season 1 spice again, and Erica Hahn & Owen Hunt will obviously be nowhere near Addison Montogomery & Preston Burke, but I seriously feel that Season 5 is on its way to being as good as Season 2.

Hmm. I wonder what this season's "major event" is gonna be?

I would’ve gone to UST: BS Bio then proceed to Med.

What do you remember most about 1st sem?

That Kenny Rogers lunch with almost the entire R2.

I remember:

- ordering chicken thigh w/ Mac & Cheese;

- sitting beside Trish;

- Tria yelling at me “ano, ok ba Taekwondo?”;

- everyone walking back to Kostka for our first Fil class;

- the sudden downpour of rain;

- walking beside Tessa and embarrassing myself ‘cause my flimsy umbrella gave in to the wind;

- everyone deciding to pass by Colayco to get their Block Pics;

- Tria staying behind since she wanted to smoke (to which I thought man, this chick is badass. WAHAHAHAHA )
